Ground Support in Mining and Rock Tunnel Support Systems

Mining ground support and rock tunnel support systems describe a set of procedures, techniques and materials used to improve the stability and maintain the load bearing capability of rock near to the edges of excavation. Examples of where this can be applied are mine tunnels, mine shafts and tunnels in civil engineering projects.

There are four main types of permanent mining ground support / rock tunnel support systems:

  • Rock reinforcement
  • Shotcrete / sprayed concrete
  • Pre-cast concrete lining
  • Steel sets

The choice of mining ground support of rock tunnel support system is dependent on hardness of rock and quality of the rock. Normet offers rock reinforcement and shotcrete /sprayed concrete.

In addition, Normet offers:

  • A temporary tunnel support method to be used before a permanent solution can be put in place.
  • Water control solutions to manage water penetration into tunnels and shafts.

Normet’s rock reinforcement portfolio includes bolt the D-Bolt®, Self-Drilling Dynamic Bolt SDDB®, Self-Drilling Anchors (SDA) as well as chemical rock reinforcement.

  • The D-Bolt®, the deformable bolt, represents a new generation in energy-absorbing rock bolting. It is specifically designed for efficient and reliable rock reinforcement in both squeezing and burst-prone strata conditions. The D-Bolt® may be installed in either cement or resin grouts, most often in a holistic rock support system that includes sprayed concrete and mesh.
Self Drilling Anchors (SDA)
  • Our complete range of SDA provides a solution for efficiently installing reinforcing bolts in unconsolidated or fractured ground, where it is difficult to keep boreholes intact long enough for traditional bolt installation.
TamPur RBG
  • To complement our ground support bolt range, Normet manufactures a range of ground support and bolt anchoring grouts ranging from cement-based products through to silicate urea resin technologies.  TamPur RBG for example, a silicate urea system, incorporates a gelling agent that produces a non-sag resin once the two components are mixed and injected. RBG is ideally suited for securing all type of rock bolts where early tensioning/loading is required along with full rock bolt encapsulation. TamPur RBG is available in varying grades to suit both an automated or manual injection process and to allow for local ambient and rock formation temperatures.
TamPur 116T
  • Our TamPur 116T is a two component 1:1 ratio silicate urea resin that reacts to form a non-expansive, solid compound that gains considerable adhesive, compressive and tensile strength within minutes. Ideal for injection into high convergence zones in deep mining or tunnel excavations to improve rock strength capability and as a binder for loose rock formation. TamPur 116T is also used extensively to secure rock and cable bolts allowing for early tensioning.

For temporary tunnel support as well as immediate sealant against air or humidity Normet is proud to offer a unique product:

TamCrete SSL (Structural Support Liner)
  • Non-cementitious acrylic polymer shell with sealant characteristic
  • Within minutes it provides a mechanical performance even the best concrete will not gain within 24 hour
  • Applied rapidly and safely supporting the rock mass in early stages
  • Can be used as an anti-oxidation barrier for quick re-entry areas
  • Can be used in conjunction or in addition to sprayed concrete, mesh and bolt ground support systems
  • Used to compliment strengthen or increase the life and durability of existing ground support systems
  • Can be sprayed using a Normet SSL 15 pump – highly mobile and light equipment
  • Can be applied remotely by linking a high output SSL 40 pump to a Minimec

Application area:

  • Rock support on drives
  • Shaft linings
  • Undercutting of stopes
  • Sprayed onto kimberlite
  • Onto dry and wet rock and concrete surfaces
