Concrete additives high in microsilica, also called silica fumes, or nanosilica result in concrete with high compressive and bending strengths, increased durability and reduced permeability. The silica reacts with Calcium Hydroxide in the cement to form Calcium Silicate Hydrate that helps better bond the concrete components together. It is this bonding that increases the compressive and bending strength of the concrete. Nanosilica has a greater surface area than microsilica so can offer even higher durability than microsilica.
